The future of the sports car segment is not so bright. But there are a few other non-promising classes and Toyota is still building those vehicles. The 2025 Toyota MR2 rumors didn’t draw too much attention. We’ll try to analyze the situation and explain why it is not so likely to happen.
Toyota brought back Supra and GR86, both in a partnership with the Gazoo Racing. Another model would definitely be too much. Anyway, the Japanese company could experiment and bring the 2025 Toyota MR2 as a limited edition vehicle. If it draws the attention, the production can continue.
Roadsters were quite popular thanks to their driving habits and maneuvering skills. But only a few nameplates are still available in the US (we don’t count exotic models you can purchase through special orders from Italy, Japan, Germany…). Mazda is still keeping Miata as one of its flagship models. Audi TT is a cool model, but if you seek for a high-performance roadster, the Porsche Boxster is the better choice by the same company. Jaguar F-Type is a combination of luxury and performance. Chevy Corvette is entering the final year of production. So, hurry up and buy it before it is late.
Future of Roadsters
Practicality is the key for the success of modern vehicles. That is why cars are losing the battle against crossovers and SUVs. And then comes roadsters that are everything but practical. Space is tight, for passengers and cargo. And then comes the roof – it might look cool, but there are a few bad things the convertible brings. For example, hard or soft, water leaks are always possible. Also, leaving the convertible without roof will expose the interior, which ages faster. Plus, without the hard pillars, the safety is decreased, as well as the protection from break-ins.
On the other hand, once you get rid of the roof while driving, it will be hard to go back to the classic car. Nowadays, you can close the vehicle with a press on a button. Also, the visibility is better, since there are no pillars. That means easier parking and not so many blind spots.
Having all this in mind, launching a roadster doesn’t seem like a good idea. However, the 2025 Toyota MR2 might bring something special and groundbreaking, that can take this class to its former glory.
2025 Toyota MR2 Specs
As a small roadster, the 2025 Toyota MR2 will probably take a turbocharged four-cylinder unit for a power source. Largest engines the MR2 ever offered were a 2.2 and a 2.0 displacements in the second generation. Nowadays, even a turbo inline-3 is a cool option, especially if Toyota goes with the new system that produces 300 hp. But, it can be a powertrain for high-end versions. For a small car, 200 hp would be more than enough. Miata is at 180 horsepower, and the last MR2 was tuned to produce 190 ponies.
2025 Toyota MR2 Release Date (Potentially)
The Japanese company might plan some things about the MR2. However, it is a general opinion that the roadster is not coming back. We can discuss it as an electric vehicle, but even Tesla is prolonging the arrival of its roadster. So, all we can do is sit and wait.
