The 2023 Toyota HiAce is available as a passenger and cargo van. The vehicle is going all-electric in the foreseeable future, but not for the 2023 YM. According to sources, the minivan will get a PHEV version in certain markets. Versatility is a key, so the van is also available on the long-wheelbase platform. Other models are SLWB, Commuter, and Crew.
The barn door is one of the best new features you will find. It is definitely the first on our list of highlights. Now, the rear door can be opened to 180 degrees for easier access to the cargo area. Under the hood of the 2023 Toyota HiAce is still a D-4D oil burner. Manual and automatic transmissions are available, as well as an all-wheel drive. Unfortunately, the van is not coming to the US. At least not until we see an all-electric model. Sienna is the representative in this market. But, Toyota could open a slot for the HiAce or ProAce. Plus, a luxury Lexus LM minivan is coming out in the near future.
Engine Specs
A 2.8-liter D-4D engine is producing power for the 2023 Toyota HiAce. It is an old and reliable partner of the minivan. The plant produces 130 kW (175 hp) and 420 Nm of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is paired to the engine in the base setup. An automatic gearbox is optional and it also increases the torque level to 450 Nm. On the other hand, if you select the HiAce Commuter, the power output drops to 120 kW.
All versions are out with rear-wheel drive. An AWD is available only in certain markets. The base configuration can return 7.5 l / 100 km and extra options increase the fuel consumption to 8.5 l / 100 km. The HiAce gets a 70-liter tank.
2023 Toyota HiAce PHEV and EV
According to sources, a hybrid setup is coming out next year. But, the 2023 Toyota HiAce PHEV will be exclusive for the Japanese market, although the minivan is very popular in Australia. The petrol engine that produces most of the power should be a 2.0-liter four-banger. In addition, the system deploys a single electric battery.
There are no speculations about outputs and range. We will have to wait to see what the HiAce plug-in hybrid is offering since this is a relatively new setup. On some other vehicles, Toyota is using a 2.5-liter mill. Also, the comeback of a V6 engine is not likely, not even in a hybrid version. Previously, the company used a 3.5-liter gasoline unit in a combination with electric motors. Four-cylinder engines became a more efficient solution.
The next step in evolution is the electric van. This market is growing and Toyota definitely wants to be one of the pioneers. Nevertheless, this one is not coming out before 2025. The bZ4x platform will serve as the base, as well as the architecture from Subaru Solterra. Two companies are joining forces for the EV segment. We expect the concept to be unveiled soon, as well as the first expectations from the range and price.
Versions and Prices
The company unveiled the pricing of the vehicle for the Australian market. The cheapest variant combines LWB and manual transmission and costs 45,000 AUD (30,000 USD). The automatic gearbox is a $2,000 upgrade, and the price can reach 55,000 AUD. The 2023 Toyota HiAce Barn Door starts from $48,000 and the automatic transmission is standard. The Commuter is way more expensive. For now, we know there will be two variants – standard and GL.
