The mid-size truck is entering a new era with a hybrid engine. Finally, Toyota launched the next-gen pickup after years of waiting. Unlike a diesel version that never happened, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid is already here. The company is expanding the I-Force Max lineup, and after the Tundra, now a smaller pickup also uses the same technology. But, Tacoma is getting power from a turbo-four engine, not a V6. Still, the outputs will be improved compared to the previous version.
Everything about the truck is new. Tacoma enters the fourth generation after 8 years. Previously, the redesign made a big impact with the fresh styling and the debut of the TRD Pro model. Now, the truck is introducing a hybrid engine as the main upgrade. Of course, there are also new look, updated interiors and the latest technology installed.
2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid Specs
A 3.5-liter V6 is history, as well as the unimpressive four-cylinder unit. Now, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid is taking charge with a 2.4-liter turbo-four plant. Thanks to the turbocharger and electric motors, the system can produce 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission sends power to rear wheels, or both axles on buyer’s demand.
Everything you need for towing and off-road drive is there – multi-link suspension, Crawl Control as a part of the Multi-Terrain Select system, and SDM. Still, the best performance comes with the TRD Pro optional package. The specs sheet is incomplete since the company is not unveiling towing capacity yet. Also, hauling with a hybrid truck is still questionable. Well, if anyone can pull this off, that is the Japanese truckmaker.
There is also another, lighter 2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid setup. The I-Force is tuning the same system to deliver 278 hp and 318 lb-ft, which is at a similar level to a previous pickup with a V6 engine. Thanks to the hybrid technology, expect much better gas mileage.
Base Engine (Non-Hybrid)
Toyota is not 100 percent sure in its hybrid experiment. But, we need to give them some time. Current engines will go through revisits and improvements. Meanwhile, the alternative to the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid is a 2.4-liter turbo with 228 hp and 243 lb-ft. Well, you can’t expect too much from these numbers and a smaller block under the hood. A 6-speed manual transmission is available for some configurations.
All-New 2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid
Not only the engine, but also the styling is new for the next-gen truck. Let’s start with cabin configurations. Toyota will offer the pickup with Xtra and Double cabs. Double is a successor of the Crew Cab. There is also a new trim level – PreRunner. LED lamps are standard all across the lineup. You will also spot a lot of black badges and cool wheels. Fans can’t wait to drive the new outlander trim called Trailhunter. Still, the top of the class version remains the TRD Pro.
Interior
Both cab layouts will offer more space inside, especially legroom. Only test mules are driven, but the new pickup needs to improve the driver’s seating position. A huge 14-inch screen is the center of the infotainment system. Next to it is a 12-inch driver’s display at higher grades. IsoDynamic seats are also there, with shock absorbers, heating, cooling, and probably a power-adjustable system. A removable Bluetooth speaker is part of the advanced JBL audio.
2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid TRD Models
The TRD lineup of the Tacoma truck is wider than before. We already mentioned one model – the PreRunner. It is a new product of the Toyota Racing Department. There are no details about every trim, but we know this is going to be an entry-level TRD version. The TRD Sport is an old name in the lineup, as well as the TRD Off-Road.
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid TRD Pro is the top of the range version with the best options. It comes with the I-Force Max system, IsoDynamic seats, Fox shocks with a unique setup and special colors. A set of 18-inch wheels is added to improve the aggressive overall appearance in combination with the unique front grille.
When Will 2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid Be Available?
The truck is official and it is just a matter of time before the company is going to launch sales. It will be closer to the 2024 season. One of the things the company still keeps a secret is pricing. We assume that the base version will cost $29,000. The TRD Pro with the I-Force Max engine won’t be under $50,000. Experts predict the Tacoma Trailhunter to cost even more. All the configurations will depend on the engines and upgrades available for each of them. Heavily loaded, the hybrid systems will probably make the MSRP go very close to $60,000.
Competition
This is an era of hybrid and electric vehicles. Toyota is making a radical move since no other truckmaker is offering a hybrid system (we don’t count MHEV with no significant boost). Expect a quick response from Ford, Jeep and Nissan.
